100,000 changes in Windows 8 Consumer Preview

February 29th, 2012 No comments

Microsoft may have launched the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 today but the company is also holding a big press event at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain to help promote the launch. During the event, which was covered by Engadget, Steven Sinofsky, the leader of the Windows team, said they have made over 100,000 changes for the Consumer Preview version compared to the Developer Preview which launched back in September.

The press event went through a number of features in Windows 8, from the personalized lock screen (with items like a calendar and battery rating) and of course the new Metro interface. Windows 8 will come with its own video store where people can download movies to rent or purchase. It will also come with a number of apps including Amazon’s Kindel eBook reader and more.

You can check out the live feed from the event to see more of Windows 8 or you can simply download the Consumer Preview version and try it out for yourself. If you don’t want to risk your PC to run what is still technically beta software, the final and commercial version of Windows 8 is expected to launch sometime before the end of 2012.

"Hana" by Lauren Oliver is an excellent bridge between Delirium and Pandemonium

February 29th, 2012 No comments

The same day that Pandemonium, the sequel to last year’s dystopian young adult novel Delirium, was released, author Lauren Oliver released a separate story called Hana. This short piece – the ebook version does not have page numbers, but this reader would estimate the reading time at about an hour, putting it as a longer short story – does not stand alone, but bridges the gap between Delirium and Pandemonium beautifully, serving as an excellent reminder of the storylines, themes, and characters of Delirium. Hana also builds upon the story, filling in the gaps of what Lena’s best friend was doing while Lena was involved in her forbidden romance with Alex.

“This is what I dream about now, the summer before my cure, during the last summer that will ever be truly mine to enjoy. I dream about sledding…I am breathless and terrified; I will soon be engulfed by whiteness and suctioned into another world.

Good-bye, Hana.

In Delirium, Hana’s character exists as a contrast to Lena’s, and while she is important to the plot and to the main character, she has little real momentum of her own. Hana occurs concurrently with the events of Delirium, and we see the motivation for Hana’s responses to Lena and Alex’s romance; Hana has a secret of her own that she needs to keep, a boy of her own that has infected her.

As the reader, I was struck by the story of Hana’s romance; somehow, the story of a girl falling for a boy who doesn’t love her for anything other than her body was more poignant in this setting. Perhaps it was because of Oliver’s writing – lyrically beautiful and pitch-perfect as always – or perhaps it was because it is set in stark contract to Lena and Alex’s relationship, which seems to exist outside such physical desires.

Delirium has often been compared to The Hunger Games, but while both of these novels are dystopian and young adult and have interesting things to say about love and loyalty, both books suffer for this comparison. The Hunger Games has a much more action based plot; both Delirium and Hana are about internalized struggle, about subtle manipulations, and about making peace – or not – with the expectations that are laid out for you by society.

At the end of Delirium, this reader was left with a question about how, exactly the authorities had found out about Lena and Alex’s plans; a subtle twist at the end of Hana gives more information about this which, while not surprising, is again written in such a poignant and deliberate way that this reader was taken aback.

Hana is available in digital editions only; it is not a stand alone piece, and should be read between Delirium and Pandemonium

E-book deal’s the steal of the century; 4000 pirated books

February 29th, 2012 No comments

A screenshot of the deal page on Cudo.com.au.

An Australian group-buying site owned by Microsoft and Nine sold e-book readers bundled with a treasure trove of thousands of pirated books including the full Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series.

The matter has prompted a rebuke from the NSW Fair Trading Minister, Anthony Roberts, who claims group-buying sites cannot simply blame vendors when they are caught running dodgy deals.

The book industry has reacted angrily and HarperCollins, publisher of some of the major titles contained on the CD including those by J.R.R Tolkien, said its corporate solicitor ”will be ringing them today”.

The site, Cudo.com.au, this week advertised a $99 e-book reader that came with ”4000 e-books you can load from a CD”. Thousands of people signed up for the deal, but the company claims it discovered the books were pirated before orders were shipped.

Cudo’s advertisement originally linked directly to a list of books that came on the bonus CD, and the list contained thousands of books that were still under copyright and available in stores. The site later removed this link from the advertisement, but the original ad is still visible in Google’s cache.

”It’s extraordinary … there’s piracy taking place on a grand scale,” said Australian Booksellers Association chief executive Joel Becker when shown the list of books.

”It’s deeply concerning to see Channel Nine and Microsoft involved … two organisations where copyright protection is a major issue to them.”

Cudo, which is a joint venture between Nine and Microsoft, said customers who bought the deal would be contacted and offered ”a higher specification e-book reader” instead.

The deal was offered through a vendor called ”grabargains.com”, and the site shifted the blame to it.

”Despite the merchant’s assurances that the offer complies with all relevant Australian laws, including copyright laws, our assessment of the 4000 e-book titles being offered determined this may not be the case,” the site’s chief executive, Mike Sneesby, said.

”It appears the merchant of this deal has breached the terms of their Cudo booking agreement. As soon as we determined this, Cudo took action to replace the merchant’s product with a higher quality device and provide customers with a new source of legitimate e-book content.”

Mr Roberts was not buying that excuse. ”I don’t believe that group buying sites can walk away from quality or compliance of the goods and services sold through their sites,” the minister said today.

Comment is being sought from the Australian Publishers Association and individual publishers including Hachette and Penguin.

On Monday this website reported that while the popularity of group-buying websites had soared in the past year, so had the number of complaints, with the sites contributing to a 39 per cent increase in complaints in NSW about online shopping.

The complaints – more than 5000 last year – prompted a warning from Mr Roberts, who said group-buying sites would be closely watched this year to protect consumers from losing money on goods or services that are never delivered.

”The concept of group buying is brilliant, there is no dobut about that, and consumers can get some great deals, so when they are good they are good but when they are bad, the sites are a disaster,” he said.

The group-buying sites have developed a code of conduct in response to widespread issues but there is no evidence that this has done anything to reduce complaints.

Drake Library’s new WILBOR system allows downloading books at home

February 29th, 2012 No comments

CENTERVILLE —
Now you can check out audiobooks and eBooks from your library at your home or office.  As part of the WILBOR consortium, the Drake Public Library offers you audiobooks and eBooks to download and enjoy.

Your library card is the “key” to downloading the books, from any computer that is connected to the Internet, at any hour of the day.  From a website you can browse or search for a title you’d like to read or listen to, log in with your library card number, and download the title to your computer.  You can then enjoy the book on your computer, or transfer to many portable or mobile devices to carry with you

“This is a great way to make more of the library’s resources available to our users 24/7/365,” said Library Director  Jami Livingston.  “You don’t have to come to the library building to check out a book, and you don’t have to return it.  The book automatically “returns” to the collection for someone else to borrow.”

WILBOR’s collection has fiction and nonfiction titles, as well as books for children and teens.  Bestsellers and classics, history and humor, business and self help — you’ll find them all in WILBOR. Ebooks will check out for two weeks and can be returned early. Audiobooks will check out for one week. Some audiobook titles can even be burned to CDs for your own, personal use.

The Drake Public  Library is one of 176 libraries in western, central and southern Iowa that participate in WILBOR. WILBOR is funded by the Friends of the Drake Public Library.

For more information and to start downloading and listening, visit the WILBOR web site at http://wilbor.lib. overdrive.com. If you don’t have a card from the Drake Public Library, call (641) 856-6676 or visit the library. Below is a more in depth explanation of WILBOR and how to use it.

1. What is WILBOR?

WILBOR stands for West Central Iowa Libraries Building Online Resources. Over one hundred Iowa libraries currently participate in this consortium group. WILBOR is a service that allows library patrons from participating libraries to download audiobooks and eBooks anytime and anywhere at no cost. There are thousands of selections spread over various categories. The Friends of the Drake Public Library are providing this service to Drake Library patrons.

2. What do I need to access and use this service?

All you will need is a computer or a reader or a mobile device with an Internet connection and be a current library patron of the Drake Public Library. The log in will require your four-digit library card number. Your library card will be considered the “key” to start downloading resources to your personal computer or portable device.

3. When will this new service be starting?

Library patrons will have access to WILBOR starting today. The library will be adding a link to its web site. Here is the WILBOR web site: http://wilbor.lib.overdrive.com.

You will always have to go in through the Drake Public Library portal to use this service. This link can be found under the Participating Libraries tab or by going in through the Login tab.

The Centerville library will be called Drake Public Library on the library listing. There will also be a link for Drake Community Library. This library is located in Grinnell. You will need to select the correct library from the list to start using the system.

You can browse the web site in advance taking a look at the various collections and titles available for downloads. There will be a number indicating number of copies available overall and number of people waiting for this resource. Hundreds of Iowa libraries have access to this resource. Expect to find waiting lists for current and popular titles. You can add your name to a waiting list for any title.

4. Are there limits to what can be downloaded from this service?

You are limited to three items that can be checked out at any one time. This can be a combination of eBooks and audiobooks or three of one kind. Audiobooks will have a one week period of usage time and eBooks are on loan for a two-week time period. There is automatic return and no late fees. There is no renewal of any item. You can check things in early. My Cart and My Account will keep track of what you are thinking about checking out or have checked out.

Keep in mind there will always be 50 selections – 25 eBooks and 25 audiobooks that can always be downloaded and checked out.

If you have over $10 of library fees with the Drake Library your access to WILBOR will not be allowed until the overdue fees are taken care of.

5. What kind of online help is available for setup of various devices?

On the left side of the main WILBOR screen is a link for Digital Help. Click it.

Then click Over Drive Help to find the Over Drive Media Console free app that will need to be installed. The Device Resource Center will guide you through the steps for whatever device you may be using. The Software/Apps tab will lead to information about setting up various computers, readers and/or mobile devices.

If you have a Kindle that may be the easiest device to set up for WILBOR downloads. You will automatically be directed to the Amazon site at the start of the process.

WILBOR supports the following: Kindle, Nook, Pad, iPhone, Droids, Windows7 Phone, BlackBerry or a Windows or Mac PC.

Keep in mind that this service is meant for patron use outside the Drake Public Library. Patrons won’t be able to do any downloading or reading on library computers in the building. This service will only work on a patron’s personal computer or device.

Enjoy the new personal reading option.

Bite Test & Adjust with Precision –T-Scan eBook Available from Tekscan

February 29th, 2012 No comments

See bite measurement and analysis technology in practice in this new eBook, “Computerized Occlusion.”

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 28, 2012

Dentistry is a science that is largely affected by its materials and equipment. Lost and damaged teeth require replacement or rehabilitation. Thanks to the development of differing dental materials and bite analysis technologies like the T-Scan® (Tekscan Inc. S. Boston, MA USA), we are now able to successfully treat clinical conditions and perform precision bite adjustment. See how a bite test can improve your clinical results.

“Computerized Occlusion”, a newly-published eBook by Dr. J.H. Kim, DDS, details several cases that utilize the T-Scan to measure the balance of a patient’s bite. Bite testing allows a clinician to evaluate occlusal contacts prior to making a bite adjustment and successfully treat clinical conditions. A simple bite test can be used to plan restorative cases, resolve jaw pain issues, manage and adjust implants, and locate traumatic occlusal contacts. Dr. Kim states in his eBook that, “As dentists, we have always faced unique challenges in understanding timing and forces of occlusal factors.”

During maxillomandibular intercuspation, time and force are the main occlusal factors the T-Scan can measurably isolate. It readily identifies the very first contact point that precedes numerous other contact points and that transitorily occur during maxilla-mandibular functional movements. The T-Scan determines the contact time-sequencing, the percentage of relative occlusal force between numerous occlusal contacts, and the dynamic display of these occurrences. This enables the clinician to better identify many interfering contacts. With the development of precision technologies, dentists can now treat many occlusal problems successfully and provide patients with predictable high quality results.

Download the free eBook, “Computerized Occlusion,” today to see how a bite test can improve clinical results.
