Ebooks: Is digital opening up a new chapter for publishing?

May 10th, 2012 No comments

Mills and Boon advert Mills and Boon has launched a mobile service

With ebook sales on the rise, how is the publishing industry embracing the world of digital?

Next week some of the biggest names in publishing will gather at the Hilton in London’s Park Lane for The Bookseller Industry Awards.

This year sees the introduction of a new category – the Digital Strategy Award – which recognises how the introduction of new technology is opening up the market.

It comes at a time when UK sales of consumer ebooks leapt by 366% in 2011 helping to offset a decline in the demand for printed books.

Last week it was revealed that the Pottermore ebook store sold £3m-worth of Harry Potter ebooks in its first month, with more than £1m of sales taking place in the first three days.

Sam Missingham, of The Bookseller’s digital publishing blog FutureBook, says 2012 is the year that digital has become embedded into publishers’ thinking and is no longer “just an interesting experimental playground for the cool kids”.

“Ebooks are the bread and butter stuff,” she says.

“Publishers are seeing huge growth in this bit of their business. One of the big leaps in digital is that publishers are able to communicate with their customers directly.”

That is true of one of this year’s award nominees, Harlequin, which has seen its Mills and Boon brand flourish in the digital era.

Ebooks have allowed the publisher to double its output of titles, which are released in monthly cycles. Sales of digital books now outstrip physical sales via the website.

“We’ve tried over the years to put digital at the heart of everything we do,” says Tim Cooper, Mills and Boon’s digital and marketing director.

“Digital lends itself to the habitual nature of our content. Our readers finish reading one and they can download the next.”

Several thousand titles on the Mills and Boon back list have been converted to ebooks, but the company is also exploring the benefits of social media.

“Having direct communication with our readers is hugely important to our future success, it’s not always about direct selling,” says Cooper.

Mills and Boon’s young adult range of books has a teenage panel – recruited via Facebook and Twitter – that gives feedback on cover designs.

Erotic covers

As well as introducing ebooks with animated covers, MB is also planning to launch an online bookclub.

But what of its range of erotic fiction? Has the ebook boosted sales among readers who may have baulked at the idea of reading an erotic paperback in public?

“Part of the appeal of digital reading is that nobody necessarily knows what you’re reading,” admits Cooper, “but I think the immediacy and the convenience of e-reading is a stronger pull.

“If you look at the digital bestsellers they are not all erotica and books with covers you wouldn’t want to be seen with.”

As Missingham points out, it is the world of smart phone and tablet apps where the book trade is being more cautious. “Given the cost of sophisticated apps, publishers have no idea if they are going to get their money back.”

“Apps within the industry have a bit of a bad reputation,” says Rob Nichols, marketing and digital director at Constable and Robinson, another publisher on the nominees’ list.

Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad was also released in app form

“They’re quite expensive to produce and at one time there was a rush to produce apps where there was no editorial need to do so.”

One of Constable and Robinson’s highest profile apps in 2011 was created for Jennifer Egan’s Pulitzer Fiction Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad. “Its unique structure lent itself to something a bit more creative,” says Nichols.

The book, a series of interlocking stories set against the background of the US music industry, jumps around in time from the punky 1970s to the near-future.

The app allows the reader to re-read the story in a different chronological order. There are also background notes on each character as well as audio and video and illustrations.

In a market fuelled by e-readers, CR has reached the point where ebooks now account for around 20% of its revenue.

The shrinkage of the printed book business – particularly in non-fiction – has also led the publisher setting up ad-funded websites Honest John – for car enthusiasts, the Complete University Guide and home-grown veg site Allotments. All three sites started life in the print world.

One of the leaders in the field of literature and apps is Faber and Faber’s partnership with Touch Press.

Last year’s digital edition of TS Eliot’s The Waste Land for the iPad proved that literature-related apps could be profitable when it earned back its costs in six weeks.

“It’s an enormously exciting time to be in digital publishing,” says Touch Press CEO and co-founder Max Whitby.

“We don’t just take a book that might exist in printed form and simply transfer it onto the iPad. We are looking for ways to give the reader some new insight into the subject matter that you cannot get on the printed page.”

Touch Press’s app The Elements set the template by bringing the periodic table of elements to life. Follow-up The Solar System won a Bookseller digital innovation award last year.

The Wasteland app featured a performance by Fiona Shaw filmed in DublinThe Wasteland app features a performance by Fiona Shaw filmed in Dublin

But Whitby says The Wasteland – with a performance by Fiona Shaw synchronised to the poem’s text – appealed to a non-scientific demographic.

Next up is an app with filmed readings of all of Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets.

“The Wasteland and Sonnets take us into a new territory that brings in a much wider audience,” says Whitby.

FutureBook’s Missingham sees the overall mood in the book trade as one of optimism.

“The digital transformation is happening quicker than it happened for music,” she says. “Are there some people who would prefer it not to be happening? Of course there are.

“But it’s creating lots of innovation.”

The full list of nominees for the digital strategy of the year award are: Nosy Crow, Harlequin, Constable and Robinson, Faber Faber Ltd, Lonely Planet, Penguin, Osprey, Kobo and W H Smith.

The Bookseller Industry Awards take place on Monday 14 May at the Hilton, Park Lane, London.

1/3 of Brits now own an ebook reader

May 10th, 2012 No comments

A new survey has revealed that a third of Brits now own an ebook reader, a stat that has risen by 21 per cent compared to 2011.

By comparison, reading printed books as an activity has fallen by 4 per cent according to the digital entertainment survey commissioned by Wiggin, although it still rides high as an activity engaged in by 43 per cent of the survey’s respondents.

Amazon Kindle reviews

Amazon Kindle review
Kindle Touch review
Kindle Keyboard review
Kindle Fire review

Add to that the fact that 38 per cent of people still have no plans to start reading ebooks, and print might not be quite as dead in the water as people seem to think.

A truth universally acknowledged

The stats come by way of the 2012 Digital Entertainment Survey from Entertainment Media Research and media law firm Wiggin, which surveyed 2,500 British people aged between 15 and 64 in March this year.

The ebook reader might be enjoying itself as the gadget du jour, but piracy in the ebook world could be on the up as a result, with 31 per cent of consumers who read ebooks admitting that they download pirate copies of books.

This could be down to confusingly high ebook pricing, a matter that is currently the subject of several debates and lawsuits as major players like Apple have been accused of price-fixing in their digital bookstores.

Paper books still well-read but ebooks set to be bestsellers

May 10th, 2012 No comments

The Irish Times – Thursday, May 10, 2012

KARLIN LILLINGTON

NET RESULTS: READ AN ebook lately? Chances are, you didn’t – at least, if Irish reader preferences are in line with those of their British counterparts.

Statistics out last week indicated the lion’s share of books are still purchased in print format. Some £489 million (€610 million) in sales of print books were made in 2011, according to the UK Publishers Association’s Statistics Yearbook.

That compares with £70 million spent on digital-format novels, part of a total £92 million in digital download sales – a figure including the short stories that are becoming increasingly popular purchases from big-name authors such as Stephen King.

But that is a bit of a misleading comparison in a sector that is experiencing explosive growth. What’s needed to fully appreciate this is context: digital sales were up an extraordinary 366 per cent on 2010, when e-novel sales totalled just £16 million.

Digital sales nearly recuperated the loss in print sales for publishers – there was a £54 million increase in digital sales and a £57 million decline in print sales compared with 2010.

Now, about 6 per cent of books are sold online, and in the US, the value of sales of ebooks outpaced that of paperbacks for the first time a year ago. The majority of all e-book sales are made through Amazon’s dominant Kindle platform, said to account for 60 per cent of ebook sales in the US.

No wonder Microsoft has elbowed its way into the ebook market. Or to be more precise, returned to the ebook market. It created software for ebooks more than a decade ago but eventually abandoned it due to lacklustre interest in electronic reading. As so often happens in technology, a development that is touted as being just on the verge of a major breakthrough, such as ebooks, often ends up sitting on that verge for a very, very long time.

A decade ago, predictions were rife for massive growth in ebooks – growth that never happened, year after year. It really took Amazon’s “printers and cartridges” approach to readers and ebooks to gradually seed the market – that is, to sell the main device at break-even or a loss. No one is really sure as details have never been released by Amazon but it’s clear the company was unlikely to ever have made much money on Kindles alone.

The real cash cow has been the sales of ebooks themselves for the Kindle, run through Amazon. Amazon wagered that most people would go on to purchase at least a dozen or so books, and made it compellingly simple to do so via the Amazon website.

Microsoft has re-entered the fray via the Kindle’s biggest competitor, the Barnes Noble Nook ereader. Two weeks ago, Microsoft made a $300 million investment into the Nook, and Barnes and Noble’s ebook division. The investment will go into a new joint subsidiary, which will help develop a Nook reader for Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. That means a Nook reader will be available on Windows desktops – that’s a lot of potential new Nook users.

Microsoft will also get a slice of the bookseller’s very profitable education ebooks business, which makes $1.8 billion in profit annually on $12 billion in sales, according to figures given by William Lynch, Barnes Noble chief executive, to the Financial Times.

One central intention of the deal with Microsoft is to expand the Nook’s market reach beyond the US, Lynch said. That’s good news for Europeans. Right now, the Nook, which has consistently had excellent reviews, won’t work easily outside the US.

Of course, there’s other ereader competition in the market too – Sony has an excellent ereader, for example, and many others offer reader devices now, often at highly competitive prices. And then there’s Apple’s iPad, which can function as an ereader. Apple has moved aggressively into ebook selling too, most recently into the education book market, offering digital textbooks to students at a standard $14.99.

That move has been challenged by the US Department of Justice, worried that the deal done with five major publishers – Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Simon Schuster and Penguin – represented price collusion. Some have already settled out of court but some US states have ongoing legal actions.

The Nook deal is seen positively by many analysts as a way of opening the market back up and creating further competition. All of which underlines how valuable the digital book has become, and the promise that this will only increase into the future.

Money for Nothing and Your eBooks for Free

May 8th, 2012 No comments

As eBook popularity explodes, authors and publishers struggle to handle rapid and massive change. Today, Paradise Publishers launched an “Author AdCash Program” for its million-member site at http://www.Free-eBooks.net. Authors collect 100% of the commission from advertising revenue, even if their book is never downloaded. Sounds like “Money for nothing,” however it’s actually an innovative revenue model, when compared to traditional, paper-based publishing.

Carson City, Nevada (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

With the exponential increase in the popularity of both eBooks and eReaders, authors and publishers are facing massive change and a literal revolution in distribution and compensation, as the traditional paper-based publishing falters. A big part of the mix is creating a profitable revenue model.

Today, leading online publisher, Paradise Publishers, announced an innovative way to put money in contributing authors’ pockets through their flagship site, Free-eBooks.net. Authors receive global exposure and a massive reading audience with their free listing but can now simultaneously collect cash commissions from advertising posted around their eBook. It’s the launch of Free-eBooks’ Author AdCash Program.

Free-eBooks.net attracts over 1,000,000, unique visitors every month to their online library. It also boasts over a million subscribers that download an average of over 12,000 eBooks, every single day from over 50 categories. Paradise earns its profits from advertising premium services. Authors post their books in digital format and allow these eBooks to be given away for free, in exchange for the exposure to millions around the world and the opportunity to share their passion, messages and stories.

Any author can enroll in the Author AdCash Program to take advantage of the millions in “traffic” that visit the popular ebook downloading site. The more people that visit each “Details” page for an eBook, the more cash a book’s author stands to make through advertising revenues, on top of all their new readers and the priceless credibility of having published material.

“We’ve partnered with Google’s Adsense to allow our authors to collect 100% of the advertising revenue earned from ads on web pages displaying their ebook,” explained Martin Wales, President of Paradise Publishers. He’s excited about the prospect of being able to offer a way to subsidize the careers of both aspiring and veteran writers. “This means Free-eBooks’ authors can actually collect money whether or not their book is even downloaded. Just for listing their ebook in our library they benefit financially.”

“We hope the all-new, Author AdCash Program demonstrates our continued thanks and extreme gratitude to our authors,” exclaims Nicolas Gremion, the CEO of Paradise Publishers. “As an online, digital publisher of free content, we appreciate these talented artists for entrusting us with publishing their entertaining stories, insightful wisdom and educational material.”

Paradise Publishers Inc. is a U.S.-based, global, online publisher of fiction and non-fiction books, in addition to textbooks and academic content. Via http://www.Free-eBooks.net, it distributes digital eBooks at no cost. They are also about to launch http://www.Foboko.com. It’s a highly anticipated, social publishing site to help anybody become an author and easily publish, promote and profit from their own eBooks.

Ebooks push erotica to bestsellers lists

May 8th, 2012 No comments

SACRAMENTO, CA – What is that soccer mom reading on her Kindle? It could be one of the nation’s best selling ebooks, 50 Shades of Grey.

The erotic trilogy has broken download records and climbed to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list and Amazon’s greatest hits. With themes of bondage, domination and sadism, it isn’t your typical Harlequin romance but a kicked up lust story that falls into the new category of “Mommy Porn.”

“I just heard a couple of gals in line at the grocery store talking about it,” Nola said. “I downloaded it to my iPhone, started reading it in the parking lot and thought, ah, this could be interesting.”

But 50 Shades of Grey is just the tip of the erotic iceberg.

Ereaders have made the genre much more accessible and private with no embarrassing covers to take to the checkout stand or to the kids’ karate class. The ereader is the ultimate brown paper wrapping.

“When I’m at lunch, at work and reading explicit parts of a book, I think, ‘I hope no one can tell what I’m reading. Its getting a little warm in here!’” Tracy said.

Amazon currently sells 70 percent of all ebooks, but erotica ebooks are so popular that traditional publishing houses are taking notice.

Harper Collins UK has just launched an erotic ebook site called “Mischief.” Not only is the publisher selling the ebooks directly to consumers, but its soliciting stories as well.

“Erotica is actually very accessible for new writers.” Mischief writer and editor Rachel Kramer-Bussell said. “Some may feature spanking or bondage. There is one about amateur escorts and ‘my secret life.’ People really enjoy that format of multiple stories around one there.”

In addition to erotica, may readers download other titles that they want to keep private.

“Some people may want to read political books that they don’t necessarily want to advertise,” said Sean Harvey of Irish Canon Press.

Harvey is an author, former literary agent and current publisher (non-erotic books) and says publishing has become the wild west as the industry adapts to meet the e-book demand.

“There will be more competition from publishers going direct which means they’ll have to up their marketing efforts,” Harvey said. “In the 50′s there was a study that showed 25 percent of the population read more than two books a year. A new study shows 50 percent of the population now reads two or more books a year. Whatever the reason, whatever they’re reading, I’m all for it.”
